WHAT IS MERINO WOOL?

Merino wool is a natural fiber grown by Merino sheep (oveja merina). It originated and was improved in Extremadura in the XII and XIII centuries, being instrumental in the economic development of Spain, which held a monopoly on the trade in its thinner and softer wool. We choose to work with Merino wool because it’s one of the most adaptable materials on Earth: each fiber naturally helps regulate body temperature, transports sweat away as a vapor, and cancels out odors; these benefits make it the ideal performance material for exploring nature.

Every single woolen item in our store is 100% Made in Spain, respecting the old ways of wool processing, our cattle, our artisans and our clients. Our machinery is over 100 years old and it doesn’t look as if it will quit anytime soon. Finally, the fabric is exposed in the dry and sunny days of the valleys of León to get rid of any moisture.

We love taking care of the process as much as you will enjoy taking it in your adventures. It’s in our tradition and spirit.

IT’S NATURAL

This wool is just proteins made up of amino acids and natural compounds. Merino wool is a natural and renewable fiber, which evolved over the years to keep sheep comfortable in our harsh environments.

HELPS REGULATE BODY TEMPERATURE

When it’s cold outside, the natural curls and curves of its fibers trap the air, insulating you. When it’s hot outside, it quickly wicks sweat away from your skin, helping to keep you cool and dry.

HELPS YOU STAY DRY AND SWEAT FREE

Merino fibers are inherently porous. They are made up of small plates that moisture vapor can creep into, meaning you won’t leave feeling damp, cold, and wet after a workout. Synthetic fabrics are not porous. They typically absorb sweat when it’s already liquid, and then your body has to heat it up to evaporate it, making it feel damp in colder weather. Merino takes a step out of the process, helping you stay warm and dry when enjoying the outdoors.

RESISTS ODORS

Merino wool is unique in that it absorbs the odor caused by bacteria, trapping its odor and preventing it from accumulating. This means you can wear merino wool odor resistant clothing for longer without having to worry about odors. Merino wool is great for longer trips or hikes when you may not have as much room to pack.

IT IS SOFT

How is merino wool better than traditional wool? It is super fine and smooth. A Merino wool fiber is â…“ the diameter of a human hair. It is so fine, actually, that when it touches the skin, it bends outward. It cannot be prickly like other wool fibers because it cannot support its own weight. Then it is smooth. Really smooth.

IT IS BIODEGRADABLE

It disappears after about 12 months in the soil. That means that when you’re done with your Merino wool equipment, the soil will regain this fibrous protein made up of amino acids, releasing carbon and nutrients back into the soil.

IT IS FIRE RESISTANT

Most outdoor aficionados spend at least some time around campfires. Merino does not normally melt or burst into flames. Nylon starts to melt around 160ºC / 320ºF and polyester begins to melt around 233ºC / 452ºF.
